Human Rights Day
Sharing Stories and Taking Action
December 10, 2006
As part of commemorating the 58th Anniversary of the signing of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Vancouver Playback Theatre partnered with Amnesty International and Oxfam Canada to present a public event on International Human Rights Day, Sunday December 10, 2006.
The event was a big success, with Amnesty collecting 200 signatures on human rights letters and petitions as part of their "Write for Rights" campaign. Event participants also found out about Oxfam Canada's focus on Women's Equality and Human Rights.
The two-hour Playback performance was powerful, filled with personal stories related to human rights. Audience members were entertained and moved, and all our perspectives were broadened. We want to thank everyone for sharing and listening to each other's stories, whether on-stage, or in small groups.
The playback performance was taking place on the same day that other playback troupes on six continents, in widely diverse settings and communities, were also performing personal stories related to human rights. This global event aligned two movements - Playback Theatre, with its hundreds of companies worldwide, and groups focused on promoting human rights.
